Understanding Tonsillitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Tonsillitis refers to a condition where the tonsils are irritated. It is usually caused by bacteria like group A streptococcus. It tends to affect teens and it generally shows with signs like throat pain, raised body temperature, ear pain, and swollen glands.

A general practitioner might diagnose it by taking a look at the tonsils and sometimes performing a swab test to confirm a bacterial infection. To treat viral cases, the focus is on rest, fluids, and pain management through hydration and rest. When bacteria are the cause, antibiotics might be used.

In recurring tonsillitis cases, surgery to remove the tonsils is an option if there are multiple severe episodes. To stop here the spread of tonsillitis, it is important to good hygiene practices.
